Fun with the Chiropractor
Humor is a great healer. After our deepest tragedies our best jokes usually arise. So many body repair processes are activated by humor. Rarely does a collection of stories illustrate this theme as much as this book does. Dr McDowall describes the funny side of his practice with stories about his patients, their fears, pains, spouses, worries, anxieties as well as the lessons they learn from them. Chiropractors are often the last healers called upon to help after all else has failed. Such tension with patient communication at this stage of pain causes incredible frustration for both the doctor and the patient. It is this environment that creates the outbursts described in this book. If you have ever wondered what people say when they hear the first creak of their bones during treatment or the wonder of how their body responds and changes without painkillers then this book will surprise you. The cartoon sketches included add another dimension to the book that shows that the author can laugh at himself. It is said that a profession comes of age when it develops a sense of humor. No other book takes you into the intimacy of a chiropractor's practice like this one. Book Review Some doctors think they would have the ideal practice if it were not for the patients! Others celebrate the diversity of the people who consult them. Donald McDowall is this second kind of doctor. The chiropractic doctor-patient encounter remains unique in today’s health care environment because it is low-tech, high-touch, patience-centred care. Even though the touch required to deliver the spinal adjustment has such immense healing power, it remains invasive, and as humans and patients we develop little mechanisms to help us adapt to and accept this intervention. During nearly 30 years of chiropractic practice in Australia’s capital, Canberra, Donald has cared for patients of all kinds from the newborn to the nation’s power-brokers. The innocence of comments made by way of a coping mechanism by patients from all walks of life reveals much of the human spirit. Dr McDowall has captured many such comments made by his patients and this collection makes for enjoyable, thoughtful reading. This little volume tells a big story about human nature and how we see ourselves. Above all, it captures a sense of the freedom and fun that comes with the trust we extend to those who help us to heal.
